Description:
Kogen-in is a part of Teramachi “temple town" in Karasuyama, where a variety of Buddhist sects are represented, and one temple, Senkoji, sequesters the grave site of world-renowned ukiyo-e artist Kitagawa Utamaro. The hushed area is rare in Tokyo. Of all the temples in Teramachi, Kogen-in is the most impressive, graced with a carp pond and pavilion on its lotus pond. The temple is devoted to Arima Yorimoto who converted to Buddhism and built a temple in Shinagawa. Ikei, the first priest of the temple, mastered the tea ceremony and moved the temple to Teramachi Karasuyama in 1926. There is a small pavilion built in the middle of Benten-ike Pond Ukigodo, which enshrines Hosho Benzaiten.
